Tarnished 9999 gold

1 Attachment(s)
I bought a gold medallion from PAMP as a wedding gift for my brother's soon to be wife. I received it 3 or 4 weeks ago and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary with the medallion. I looked at it again this week and noticed that there was a dark spot at the bottom of the outer ring. I've attached a picture.

I kind of surprised since I thought 9999 gold would not tarnish and the medallion is still sealed in its original package. I emailed PAMP on Wednesday but I haven't heard back. So in the case I can't exchange it, is there a safe way to clean it?

Thanks!

it looks like someone put a spot on it with a purple magic marker.

acetone or isopropyl alcohol i think would safe for wiping it off, if it is a magic marker.

Thanks for the replies. It's weird because I don't have the impression this was done by a marker. I'm not 100% confident, but I don't think the mark was there when I first received the medallion, but it was.

I had a 50 Peso that had reddish discolorations due to copper inclusions but that isn't supposed to happen with .9999. Try the isopropyl with a q-tip in case it is a surface marking. It takes a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid to react with pure gold. Well maybe hydroflouric too, any rate very potent stuff.

Thanks a lot! I'll try this out if I don't hear back from PAMP Gold Avenue.

Isn't that gold a little soft for a medallion?
